Alan Richard Leatherdale was born in Catford, South London on 8 May 1897, the son of George Fenning Leatherdale and his wife Mabel Gertrude (née Parsons). He was educated at St Anne's School, Redhill. In August 1913, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank as a junior at Stratford branch. In March 1914 he transferred to Andover branch.

 

In 1915 Leatherdale applied to the Inns of Court Officers Training Corps, but was rejected on health grounds. Instead he joined the Royal Fusiliers, and by 1916 was a Corporal in the regiment's 26th (Bankers') Battalion. He was killed in action on 18 September 1916 at Flers on the Somme. He was 19 years old.
