During the First World War Lord left his job at the bank's Leicester branch to join the army. By 1918 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Tank Corps, on active service in France. He died there on 21 March 1918. He was 24 years old.
Ernest Lord is commemorated on two bank war memorials at NatWest Leicester Granby Street branch: a standard format London County Westminster & Parr's Bank memorial and a more unusual photographic tribute.

Delighted to find a memorial, and photograph, to my late Grandmothers sweetheart in your Leicester Branch. He has been remembered in her subsequent family for over 100 years and its is wonderful to be able to put a face to the name. When times return to normal I will make an appointment to visit.
