Herbert Lewis was born in Derby in May 1895. In November 1911 he went to work for Parr's Bank at its Matlock branch. He later transferred to Chesterfield branch.

 

During the First World War Lewis left the bank to go on military service. By 1917 he was a Lance Corporal in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment), on active service in France. He was killed in action on the Somme on 4 May 1917. He was 21 years old.

 

Herbert Lewis is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Chesterfield branch.
