John Christopher Lander was born on 25 July 1894, the son of John Lander and his wife Carrie. In July 1912, shortly before his 18th birthday, Lander went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.
In November 1915 Lander left his job as a clerk at the bank's Maidstone branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the London Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 24 November 1917. He was 23 years old.
John Lander is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Maidstone branch.
