John Gordon Lewis was born on 31 January 1891. In October 1908, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Stoke-on-Trent branch. He transferred to Rugeley as a clerk in January 1912; Worcester in January 1913; and Oxford in February 1915.

 

During the First World War Lewis left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Rifleman in the London Regiment. He was killed in action at the Battle of Messines, France, on 7 June 1917. He was 26 years old.
