John Edward Lowrie was born in London in 1896, the son of John Lowrie, a house painter, and his wife Lydia. He worked for Glyn, Mills, Currie & Co at its offices in Lombard Street, London.

 

In February 1916 Lowrie left his job in the bank's Country Office to go on military service. By the following year he was a Second Lieutenant in the London Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 17 June 1917. He was 21 years old.
