Joseph Henry Little was born in Sculcoates, Yorkshire, in 1899, the only son of Henry College Little, a schoolmaster, and his wife Florence. He was educated at the Royal Masonic School, Bushey, Hertfordshire. After leaving school he went to work for Union of London & Smiths Bank at its Hull Union Bank branch.

 

During the First World War Little joined the army, serving as a Private in the East Yorkshire Regiment. He was wounded in action on 3 September 1918. His right leg had to be amputated, after which he developed septic poisoning. He died of his injuries on 26 October 1918. He was 19 years old.

 

Joseph Little is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
