Nevill Graham Newcome Hart Lewis was born on 21 February 1893, the son of Dr David Thomas Lewis, a surgeon, and his wife Lucy Mildred Thomas. Dr Lewis died while Nevill was still a boy.

 

In July 1911, when Lewis was 18 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Abergavenny branch. Three years later, just before the outbreak of the First World War, he completed his apprenticeship and was promoted to a clerkship at the same branch.

 

During the war Lewis left the bank to go on military service. By 1917 he was a Captain in the Monmouthshire Regiment. He was killed by a shell on the Western Front on 17 September 1917. He was 24 years old.
