Tom Rowe Lewis was born on 27 February 1899, the son of Edgar Aman Lewis, a colliery accountant. He was educated at Pontypridd Intermediate School.

 

In August 1915, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Barry Docks branch. He later left the bank to join the army, becoming a Lance Corporal in The Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). He was killed in action in France on 18 September 1918. He was 19 years old.
