Andrew Youngson Greig McLauchlan was born in London on 13 August 1895, the son of a sea captain and his wife. In December 1912, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In May 1915 McLauchlan left his job as a clerk at the bank's Bishop's Stortford branch to join the army. By 1918 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Manchester Regiment, on active service in France. He was killed in action there on 28 September 1918. He was 23 years old.
