Arthur Stanley Mather was born on 29 July 1888. In December 1905 he went to work for Manchester & County Bank.

 

In November 1915 Mather left his job at the bank's Bolton branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the Manchester Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 9 June 1917. He was 28 years old.

 

His manager at the bank later recalled, 'he was a good clerk - always willing and anxious to assist to the best of his ability those with whom he came in contact,' adding that he had 'a large circle of friends in the Bolton district as he was an excellent gymnast and thorough sport'.
