Cecil Sidney Mason was born on 5 June 1893, the son of Sidney Mason and his wife Edith. In October 1909, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its London St Martin's-le-Grand branch. He transferred to London office as a clerk in May 1914. He was also a member of the bank's staff sports club.

 

During the First World War Mason left the bank to join the army, becoming a Rifleman in the London Regiment. He was killed in France on 4 September 1915. He was 22 years old.
