Charles Grenville Maile was born on 7 June 1884, the son of George Charles Maile and his wife Harriet Mary. In December 1904, when he was 20 years old, he went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank and Maile became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank. He was a member of the bank's staff sports club, and an accomplished runner, winning numerous trophies.
In January 1916 Maile left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Knightsbridge branch to join the navy. By 1918 he was a Paymaster on board HMS Perth. He was killed in action on 1 October 1918. He was 34 years old.
Charles Maile is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London Knightsbridge branch.
