Charles Edward Manship was born in Chesterfield in 1897, the son of Charles and Edith Manship. In about 1915 he went to work for Parr's Bank.

 

During the First World War Manship left his job at the bank's Chesterfield branch to join the army. By 1918 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment), on active service on the Western Front. He died there on 24 July 1918. He was 20 years old.

 

Charles Manship is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Chesterfield branch.
