Fred Haslam Manaton was born in Braunton on 19 February 1891, the son of William Manaton, a tailor, and his wife Sarah Ellen. In June 1909, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Blandford branch. He completed his apprenticeship three years later, and was promoted to a clerkship there. In November 1912 he transferred to Exeter branch, and in September 1913 to Bideford branch.
In October 1914 Manaton left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the West Yorkshire Regiment. He served at Gallipoli and in Egypt before being posted to France, where he died on 17 September 1916 of wounds received in action. He was 25 years old.
