Frederick James Martin was born in Eccles, Lancashire on 6 June 1899, the son of Frederick and Minnie Martin. In May 1915 he went to work for Manchester & County Bank.

In July 1917 Martin left his job at the bank's Manchester head office to join the army, becoming a Private in the Machine Gun Corps. He died of pneumonia in England on 16 November 1918. He was 19 years old.
