George Alexander Moore

George Alexander Moore was born on 22 July 1897, the son of Herbert Alexander, a commercial traveller, and his wife Gertrude Annie. He was educated at Cardiff School of Commerce.

 

In March 1914, when Moore was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Gloucester branch.  His manager there described him as 'a very promising youngster: has made good progress. Sharp and intelligent.'

 

During the First World War Moore left the bank to join the army, serving initially in the London Regiment and later as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 2 May 1918. He was 20 years old.
