Place of work: Glasgow Renfield Street branch

George Edwin Mathias was born on 29 April 1895, the second son of Leonard Mathias, a Colonel in the Indian army. In September 1912, when he was 17, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland.

Mathias initially worked as an apprentice at the bank's Renfield Street branch in Glasgow, with the intention of undertaking two years' training prior to joining Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation. However, he was still working at Renfield Street when, in October 1914, he resigned from the bank in order to enlist in the army.

Private Mathias of the Machine Gun Corps was killed in action on the Somme on 24 August 1916. He was 21 years old.

George Mathias is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh
