Henry Martin

Henry Yarde Martin was born on 22 November 1888, the son of a navy paymaster. In October 1906, shortly before his 18th birthday, he went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Martin became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In September 1914 Martin left his job at the bank's St Albans branch to join the army. By 1916 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Leicestershire Regiment, on active service in Salonika. He died on 14 September 1916 of wounds received in action. He was 27 years old and left a widow, Nora, whom he had married in June 1915.

 

Henry Martin is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest St Albans branch.
