Herbert Edward Markham was born on 28 February 1896. In April 1913, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In September 1914 Markham left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Harrow Road branch to go on military service. By 1917 he was a Lieutenant in the Royal Marine Light Infantry, on active service in France. He was killed in action while leading a bombing party on 26 April 1917. He was 21 years old.

 

Herbert Markham is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London Kilburn branch.
