Joseph Martin was born in Whithorn in 1888, the son of John and Jane Martin. He worked for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co at its Manchester head office.

Early in the First World War Martin left the bank to go on military service as a Private in the Manchester Regiment. He died at Gallipoli on 5 June 1915. He was 26 years old.
