Murdoch Archibald MacTaggart was born in Bowmore in 1895. In February 1913, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Bowmore branch.
During the First World War MacTaggart left his job at the bank to go on military service, and by 1917 he was a Captain in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, on active service in France. He died there on 16 May 1917. He was 22 years old.
Murdoch MacTaggart is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
