Robert Cecil Muirhead was born in Norwich on 22 March 1895, the son of James Walter Muirhead, a music professor, and his wife Grace Mary. In March 1911, a few days before his 16th birthday, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Norwich branch.
During the First World War Muirhead joined the army, becoming a Lance Corporal in the 26th (Bankers') Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action on the Somme on 10 October 1916. He was 21 years old.
