Thomas Blackshaw Mather was born in Stockport in 1892, the youngest son of Richard Mather, landlord of the Commercial Hotel there, and his wife Alice Jane. He was brought up by his mother and her second husband, a Major Rawlinson, of Shaw Heath.

 

He worked for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co, but during the First World War left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He died in Armentières, France on 24 August 1916. He was 24 years old.
