Thomas Arthur Reginald Mills was born in Derby in 1896, the son of William Arthur Mills, a railway clerk, and his wife Minnie. In August 1913 he went to work for Crompton & Evans' Union Bank at its Ilkeston branch. He later transferred to Heanor branch. Crompton & Evans' Union Bank was acquired by Parr's Bank in 1914, and Mills became an employee of the larger bank.
During the First World War Mills left his job at the bank to join the army. By 1917 he was a Lieutenant in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment), on active service on the Western Front. He was killed in action there on 26 September 1917. He was 20 years old.
