Alexander Frank Nicholson was born in Woodford, Essex, in 1893, the son of Frank Abernuty Nicholson, a grocer, and his wife Agnes Eliza. He worked for Glyn, Mills, Currie & Co.

 

In September 1914 Nicholson left his job in the bank's Town Office to join the army, becoming a Private in the London Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 21 September 1916. He was 23 years old.
