Arthur John Norman was born in Heathfield, Somerset, in 1884, the son of Christopher Norman, a farmer, and his wife Lucy Hannah. From about 1901 he worked for Stuckey's Banking Co. In 1909 that bank was acquired by Parr's Bank, and Norman became an employee of the larger bank.

 

During the First World War Norman left his job at the bank's Tiverton branch to go on military service in the Somerset Light Infantry. He was later commissioned into the Leicestershire Regiment. Second Lieutenant Norman was killed in action in France on 29 September 1916. He was 32 years old.
