Stanley Neville was born in Croydon, Surrey, in 1891, the youngest son of John and Emily Neville. His father was a bank cashier and his older brother a bank clerk. Stanley also went into banking, working for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co at its London office. From 1909 to 1913 he was a territorial soldier in the 20th Battalion, London Regiment.

 

In 1915 Neville applied for a commission in the Essex Regiment. He joined them on home defence service in the Suffolk/Essex border, and by 1918 held the rank of Captain. He died of pneumonia in Colchester Military Hospital on 6 November 1918. He was 27 years old.
