Herbert Ernest Malcolm Owen was born at Llanfairfechan on 27 October 1898, the son of the Reverend Edwin Jones Owen, a Church of England clergyman, and his wife Jessie Beatrice. At the end of 1915 Owen applied to work for National Provincial Bank of England as a branch apprentice.

 

Owen subsequently left his job at the bank's Hanley branch to join the Royal Flying Corps. He served as a Second Lieutenant obtaining his aviator's certificate in June 1917. He was killed while flying on 18 July 1917. He was 18 years old.
