John Cadwaladr Owen was born in Criccieth on 19 December 1896, the son of David Owen, a farmer, and his wife Elizabeth. He was educated at Carnarvon Grammar School. In October 1914, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Bala branch. He transferred to Conway branch, still as an apprentice, in December 1915. Early in 1916 he transferred again, to Penmaenmawr branch.

 

In April 1916 Owen left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Private in The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment). He was killed in action in Belgium on 27 April 1918. He was 21 years old.
