Robert Owen was born on 13 February 1899, the son of Roger Owen, a farmer, and his wife Elizabeth. He was educated at Denbigh Country School. In January 1916, just before his 17th birthday, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice. He started at Mold branch, but after a week transferred to Prestatyn branch.

 

Owen later left his job at the bank to go on military service, becoming a Private in the Cheshire Regiment. He was killed in France on 16 February 1918, three days after his 19th birthday.
