Andrew Jack Prentice was born in Tynemouth, Northumberland, in 1899, the son of Charles and Mary Leathead Prentice. In May 1914, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Lanark branch.

 

During the First World War Prentice left the bank to go on military service. By October he was a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force. He died on 16 October 1918 of injuries received while flying. He was 19 years old.

 

Andrew Prentice is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh
