Armand Raleigh Poole was born in Lambeth on 29 March 1895, the son of Reginald and Winifred Poole, mantle manufacturers. Reginald died while Armand was still a boy, and Winifred continued the business on her own. After leaving school Poole became a commercial clerk. In November 1913, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England.

 

In January 1916 Poole left his job at the bank's London Mayfair branch to join the army, becoming a Rifleman in the London Regiment. He died of wounds in France on 15 April 1917. He was 22 years old.
