Ernest Arthur Powell was born in London in 1898, the son of Arthur Harry Powell and his wife Ethel Marion. In September 1915 he went to work for Parr's Bank.

 

In December 1916 Powell left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Bartholomew Lane office to join the army. By 1918 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Cheshire Regiment, on active service in France. He died on 15 September 1918 of wounds received in action. He was 20 years old.

 

Ernest Powell is commemorated on a bank war memorial held at NatWest Group Archives.
