John Charles Pulford was born in Felstead, Essex, on 16 August 1896, the son of Arthur Louis Pulford, a miller and corn merchant, and his wife Beatrice Ellen. In March 1915, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In November 1915 Pulford left his job as a clerk at the bank's Bishop's Stortford branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the London Regiment. He died in France on 30 December 1917. He was 21 years old.
