Reginald Paynter was born in Walthamstow on 2 October 1883, the son of John Paynter, a commercial silk buyer, and his wife Lydia. John died while Reginald was still a child. After leaving school Paynter went to work for Glyn, Mills, Currie & Co at its offices in Lombard Street, London.

In June 1916 Paynter left his job in the bank's Country Office to go on active service, originally in the King's Royal Rifle Corps but later in the Border Regiment. In October 1917 he wrote to let his bank colleagues know how he was getting on: 'I have seen plenty of fighting recently', he wrote, 'but am glad to say I am still fit and well'. Second Lieutenant Reginald Paynter was killed five days later, on 26 October 1917. He was 34 years old and left a widow, Florence, whom he had married 8 years earlier.
