Richard Henry Plater was born in Penarth, Glamorganshire, in 1887, the only son of the Reverend Richard James Plater and his wife Nina. From around 1907 he worked for Parr's Bank.

 

During the First World War Plater left his job at the bank's London Charing Cross branch to join the army, and by 1917 he was a Lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade. He died in France on 3 May 1917 of wounds received in action. He was 29 years old.
