Robert Leman Purdom was born in Wilton, Roxburghshire, on 8 December 1883, the third son of Robert Purdom, a solicitor and banker, and his wife Helen. In January 1902 he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Hawick branch. He became a clerk there in June 1909, and moved to the bank's London office in September 1912. In March 1913 he transferred to the bank's Edinburgh West End branch.

During the First World War Purdom left his job at the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He was killed in action in France on 21 March 1917. He was 33 years old.

Robert Purdom is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh.
