Sidney John Pilgrim was born in Edmonton, Middlesex, in 1894, the son of John William Pilgrim and his wife Mary Minnie. From about 1911 he worked for London County & Westminster Bank as a lift operator in its London head office.

In August 1914 Pilgrim left the bank to join the army. Gunner Pilgrim of the Royal Garrison Artillery was killed in action in France on 27 August 1918. He was 24 years old.
