Walter Ernest Powell was born in Wimbledon, Surrey, in 1881, the son of Herbert Austin Powell, an insurance clerk, and his wife Ethel Marguerite. In around 1898 he went to work for Parr's Bank. He was a member of the bank's staff sports club.

 

During the First World War Powell left his job in the bank's London Bartholomew Lane office to join the army, becoming a Private in the Honourable Artillery Company. He was killed in action in Italy on 22 April 1918. He was 37 years old.

Walter Powell is commemorated on a bank war memorial held at NatWest Group Archives.
