Alfred Oliver Ridout was born on 13 May 1895, the son of Alfred Edgar Ridout. In March 1915, when he was 19 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In October 1915 Ridout left his job as a clerk at the bank's London head office to join the army, becoming a Lance Corporal in the London Regiment. He died in France on 3 May 1917, ten days short of his 22nd birthday.
