Arthur Rowe

Bank: Parr’s Bank

Place of work: Bristol Fishponds branch

Died: 25 August 1915

Arthur Douglas Rowe was born in Bristol in 1891, the son of James Bowerman Rowe, a shopkeeper, and his wife Catherine. From about 1910 he worked for Parr's Bank.

Early in the First World War Rowe left his job at the bank's Bristol Fishponds branch to go on military service, becoming a Lance Corporal in the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars. He died on a hospital ship in the Dardanelles on 25 August 1915 of wounds received in action. He was 24 years old.

His obituary in the bank's staff magazine quoted a letter from the Chaplain on the hospital ship: 'we did our best to make his last hours restful, and when the end came he passed away with a smile. He died the death of a gallant English gentleman, and you may well be proud of him.'
