Charles Henry Rowed was born in Prescot, Lancashire, in 1894, the son of Charles and Christina Rowed. He was educated at Liverpool College. In February 1911 he went to work for Parr's Bank, initially at its Liverpool branch. Two months later he transferred to Prescot branch.

 

Early in the First World War Rowed left the bank to go on military service. He was commissioned into the South Lancashire Regiment, and by May 1915 held the rank of Lieutenant. He was shot and killed by a sniper on the Somme on 9 September 1916. He was 22 years old.

 

Charles Rowed is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest St Helens branch.
