Claude Arthur Gordon Rutter was born in Eccles, Lancashire, in 1891. He was educated at Sale High School, where he was a keen sportsman, a member of both Sale Rugby Football Club and Sale and District Miniature Rifle Club. He was also connected with the St Mary Magdalene Corps of the Church Lads' Brigade at Ashton-upon-Mersey for several years. From 1906 he worked for Parr's Bank at its Sale branch.
From 1912 Rutter was a territorial soldier, a member of the Manchester Regiment. He was mobilised at the outbreak of war in 1914, leaving the bank to go on active service. Corporal Rutter was killed in action at Gallipoli on 25 May 1915. He was 23 years old. His brother, also serving in the Manchesters, was present at his burial.
