Griffith Roberts

Bank: National Provincial Bank of England

Place of work: Cardiff Bute Docks branch

Died: 7 June 1917

Griffith Evans Roberts was born on 17 April 1891, the son of a school headmaster. In January 1909, when he was 17, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England at its Manchester branch. In January 1912 he was promoted to clerk, and later that year he transferred to the staff of Cardiff Bute Docks branch, working at its sub-branch at Abertillery. A staff report in 1913 called him 'a most intelligent youth with quite a remarkable knowledge of the trades of Port Talbot, a very good clerk and most useful here, he ought ultimately to do very well in the service'.

During the First World War Roberts left the bank to join the army, and by 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Border Regiment, on active service on the Western Front. He was killed in action there on 7 June 1917. He was 26 years old.
