Harry Roberts was born on 1 July 1898, the son of a shipping company cashier. He was educated at Liverpool Collegiate School. In July 1915 Roberts went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Oldham branch.

 

In March 1917 Roberts left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Manchester Regiment. He died on 12 October 1918 of wounds received in action on the Somme. He was 20 years old.
