John Arthur Rhodes was born in Bradford on 16 July 1892, the son of Samuel Rhodes, a solicitor's clerk, and his wife Elizabeth Hannah. In June 1908 he went to work for Bradford District Bank as a junior clerk. By 1911 he was working at the bank's Halifax branch, and in June of that year he transferred to Bradford Market Street branch.

 

During the First World War Rhodes left the bank to join the army. By 1918 he was a Second Lieutenant in the West Yorkshire Regiment, on active service in France. He died on the Somme on 24 August 1918. He was 26 years old.
