Richard Birkbeck Ravenscroft was born on 9 August 1892. In November 1910, when he was 18 years old, Ravenscroft went to work for Birkbeck Bank. The following year the bank was purchased by London County & Westminster Bank, and Ravenscroft became an employee of the much larger bank.

 

In June 1915 Ravenscroft left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Foreign branch to join the army. By 1917 he was a Lieutenant in the Hertfordshire Regiment, on active service on the Western Front. He died there on 16 August 1917, one week after his 25th birthday.

 

Richard Ravenscroft is commemorated on a bank war memorial held at NatWest Group Archives.
