Thomas Ewart Richards was born on 13 November 1898, the son of Josiah Richards, a master mariner, and his wife Mary Sarah. In March 1916, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England at its Cardigan branch. A bank report described him as of 'good character, very willing and anxious to perform his duties satisfactorily'.

 

During the First World War Richards left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He was killed in action on the Somme on 4 September 1918. He was 19 years old.
