Vernon Sawtell Roberts was born on 6 August 1891, the son of Thomas Henry Roberts and his wife Hannah Welch Roberts. In March 1911, when he was 19 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In February 1916 Roberts left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Lombard Street branch to go on military service, becoming a Private in the London Regiment. He died in France on 1 October 1916. He was 25 years old.

 

Vernon Roberts is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
